For a large proportion of Project Managers, while the attainment of some form of professional certification signifies ‘professional credibility’, it does not often enable the much sought transition from an operational forum into one that is more strategic in nature. Sadly, in far too many organizations, Project Managers are expected to do no more than provide operational support – in of itself, a highly value-adding proposition – while strategic thinking and planning are expected to emanate from other corners of the organization. Consequently, many successful Project Managers – selected largely on the basis of one form or another of technical expertise – become frustrated at the lack of a clear career development path where the value of their expertise and experiences can be maximized. To be sure, not every successful Project Manager wishes to assume the role of Project Leadership.
